CQC Registration and Combat Sports Insurance: What Promoters Miss

Most promoters book medical cover the way they book security or a ring: by price and availability. It is one of the few decisions on a show where the cheapest option can create a five- or six-figure liability, and where the gap only becomes visible after something has already gone wrong.

Registration is not a formality

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. A CQC registered provider has had its clinical governance, staffing, safeguarding and record keeping examined, and remains subject to inspection. An unregistered provider has had none of that verified by anyone.

For a promoter, that difference is not abstract. When an incident is reviewed by an insurer, a sanctioning body or a solicitor, the first question asked about medical cover is whether the provider was a regulated healthcare organisation.

The insurance blind spot

General event medical insurance covers festivals, marathons and county shows. It very commonly excludes combat sports, because the liability profile is entirely different: deliberate blunt force trauma, head injury risk, and a high volume of clinical decisions made under time pressure.

The result is a provider who genuinely believes they are insured, holding a certificate that would not respond to a combat sports claim. Ask directly for professional indemnity insurance that names combat sports events, and ask to see the certificate before contracts are signed.

What good looks like

A provider you can safely put on your risk assessment should be able to produce, without hesitation: CQC registration details you can verify at cqc.org.uk, a professional indemnity certificate covering combat sports, named clinical leadership for your event, documented escalation protocols, and incident reporting you can hand to a regulator or insurer.

Central Ambulance Service holds all of it. If a claim arises from our clinical care, it sits with us and our insurer — not with your promotion.

The question worth asking yourself

If a fighter were seriously injured on your show tomorrow and a solicitor asked for your medical provider's registration and insurance documentation, could you produce it that afternoon? If the answer is anything other than yes, the gap is worth closing before your next date.
